In Foreign Affairs Council, Foreign Minister Rinkēvičs voices concern for Ukraine’s position in dialogue with the EU and calls for discussions on restrictions to human rights and political freedoms in Russia

On 14 May in Brussels, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs took part in the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council. While the European Union’s foreign ministers discussing the EU-Ukraine relations, Minister Rinkēvičs expressed concern over the deterioration of political and human rights situation in Ukraine.

Foreign Minister to take part in Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels

On 14 May, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs will take part in the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels. During the meeting, the ministers intend to continue their discussion on Afghanistan from the perspective of NATO Chicago Summit. Other topics on the agenda are the preparation for the EU-Mexico Summit, Ukraine, the Middle East Peace Process, and EU’s Southern neighbourhood.

Join the European Union Garden Festival!

On Saturday, 12 May, Vērmanes Garden in Riga will be home to the European Union Garden Festival, where ten themed tents will feature various directions important for the EU and Latvia. All through the day, visitors will be able to take part in exciting activities and find useful information in the tents titled “The European Union House”, “Active Europe”, “Productive Europe”, “Creative Europe”, “Youth in Movement”, “Prosperous Europe”, “Digital Europe”, “The Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU”, “Green Europe”, and “Rīga|2014”.

Europe Day marked by Living European Flag event

“The Living European Flag” event on 9 May in the Esplanade marked the birthday of the European Union. The eight-metres-wide and fourteen-metres-long flag was created by the participants holding 1000 blue balloons and twelve yellow umbrellas. The event was organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in association with the European Commission Representation in Latvia, the European Parliament Information Office and the Danish Cultural Institute.

Foreign Minister and EU Special Representative discuss Central Asian region’s issues

On 8 May, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the European Union Special Representative for Central Asia Pierre Morel. The matters discussed were related to the Northern Distribution Network (NDN) and the Central Asian region, as well as the Strategy of the European Union for, and its dialogue with Central Asia. Special Representative Morel shared his long experience of working with the region and its countries.

Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs: EU funding should be used for growth

On 24 April in Luxembourg, the General Affairs Council discussed both topics of priority importance for Latvia in the EU multiannual financial framework for 2013. Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs commended the fact that the negotiating document prepared by the Danish Presidency included the need for a case-by-case solution concerning those member states which have encountered a sharp fall in GDP over the recent years.

At Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg, Foreign Minister of Latvia tells about Latvian Government's planned support to Afghanistan

On 23 April, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs participated in the meeting of the General Affairs Council in Luxembourg that took stock of the developments in Myanmar, the Middle East region and a number of African countries. Discussing the situation in Myanmar, Minister Rinkēvičs commended the change in that country and emphasised the openness of the parliamentary election and the significance of releasing political prisoners.

EU adopts restrictive measures against some Belarusian entrepreneurs

On 22 March, the Foreign Affairs Council adopted a decision to apply further restrictive measures against certain Belarusian businessmen related to the Belarusian regime, and their companies. In a debate on Belarus, Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs expressed support to the compromise decision by the EU which envisages proportionate and effective restrictive measures.

Foreign Minister Rinkēvičs to take part in Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels

On 23 March, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs will take part in the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels and join the foreign ministers in a discussion on the current situation in Syria, Belarus and the Sahel Region. In view of a further deterioration of the human rights situation in Belarus, the ministers will debate applying further restrictive measures against the Belarus regime.

Foreign Minister Rinkēvičs: priority of Latvia’s foreign policy – EU multiannual budget

“The EU Multiannual Financial Framework for 2014-2020 is one of the foreign policy priorities, a successful implementation of which is vital for Latvia’s further development and growth,” emphasised Foreign Minister Rinkēvičs at the first seminar for regional media on the EU’s multiannual budget, held on 15 March. As the minister indicated, the process of budget negotiations is going to be complicated and, therefore, with the best possible outcome.
